In aerospace manufacturing, Rod End Bearing components are critical precision parts widely used in flight control systems and structural connection assemblies.

Because aerospace applications demand exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term reliability, manufacturers commonly use high-performance materials such as PH 13-8 Mo stainless steel.

PH 13-8 Mo is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel known for its high strength, excellent toughness, and superior corrosion resistance.

However, these material properties also create significant machining challenges.

During rough machining and high material removal operations, cutting loads increase substantially, accelerating tool wear and making both tool life and process stability major manufacturing concerns.

  

😓 Customer’s Manufacturing Challenge

The aerospace customer was performing Straddle Milling roughing operations on Rod End Bearing components using a specialized machining system.

The original tooling solution used a brazed carbide cutter, but tool life was limited to approximately: 100 workpieces per tool.

This created several production limitations:

• Frequent tool replacement

• Increased machine downtime

• High tooling cost

• Reduced production efficiency

To improve machining performance, YIH TROUN implemented:

The tooling system combines:
