【Y.T. Center Drill】Solving Ball Stud Micro-Hole Chamfering Challenges with 23X Longer Tool Life
Ball Studs are critical components in automotive steering and suspension systems, where dimensional accuracy and machining consistency directly influence vehicle performance and safety.
For this application, the customer needed to machine an internal chamfer inside an extremely small hole in an S45C Ball Stud — a challenging operation due to limited machining space and concentrated cutting loads.
The original HSS chamfering tool operated at: VC 28 m/min, 1500 RPM, while achieving a tool life of only approximately 3,000 workpieces.

The rigid indexable carbide insert design provided stable cutting performance even in confined machining spaces.
As a result:
• Cutting speed increased to VC 70 m/min and 3700 RPM
• Tool life improved from 3,000 to 70,000 workpieces
• Overall tool life increased by more than 23X
• Tool replacement frequency and downtime were significantly reduced
• Chamfer consistency and production efficiency were greatly improved
